Any senior caregiver in Lubbock, TX can tell you that summers tend to get pretty intense in this area. Heat waves are very common during summer months so it’s important to take certain precautions before venturing outside, especially if you’re a senior.
Understandably, many seniors can’t wait for summer to kick in so they can spend more time outdoors and enjoy the warm sun. However, in order to properly enjoy summer, one must first be safe.
Ask any professional caregiver and they will tell you that there are a number of dangers associated with walking outside in the summer without proper protection. That goes double if you’re a senior, as your skin is more vulnerable to harmful radiation and will take longer to recover. But don’t worry because you can definitely enjoy yourself this summer by taking a few simple precautions.
The best way to protect your skin from ultraviolet radiation is by using sunscreen on a daily basis. Be sure to ask your caregiver if you’re not sure what type of sunscreen to use or how much of it you should be using. Everyone’s skin is different so it’s important to use sunscreen that’s suitable for your type of skin.
In addition to using sunscreen, another good idea is to use skin moisturizing products. A lot of people use these products during the winter to prevent dry skin caused by cold weather; however, it helps during the summer too to prevent dry skin caused by air conditioning.
While it’s a good idea to take care of your skin from the outside, it’s equally important to take care of it from the inside as well. The best way of doing this is by making sure you’re always properly hydrated during the summer months. A lot of water is lost due to excessive sweating during this period so drink plenty of water daily to make up for that.
