Ensuring the Safety of Your Senior by Reducing Fire Risks

Oct 8, 2018 by Lisa Carson RN, BSN

If your aging loved one life alone, you have every right to be concern about their safety. And the biggest threat to their safety comes from fires. According to the National Fire Protection Association, more than 3,000 people die each year as a result of fires. And a big percentage of the victims are senior citizens.

The reason is that many seniors no longer have the physical abilities needed to put down a fire in their home or at least escape from it. Furthermore, many seniors struggle with cognitive issues such as forgetfulness, which can cause them to turn off the stove when leaving their home.

There are some things you can do to improve the safety of your senior, including:

  • Making sure that the smoke detectors in their home work fine
  • Putting fire extinguishers where the senior can reach them easily
  • Ensuring that there are no obstacles on their escape route if a fire starts
  • Hiring professional electricians to check all the wiring in the senior’s home.

Unfortunate, even if you take all of these measures, your senior won’t be 100% safe. The only way to ensure their complete safety is to move in with them. And if you can’t leave your home, you can ask some of the home health agencies to help you out.

Comfort Keepers is one of the home health agencies that offer their services In Lubbock, Texas and surrounding areas. They can provide care to the senior around-the-clock, ensuring they remain safe and sound. The best thing is that this is one of the home health agencies that’s focused on the independence of the client. This means that not only will the senior remain in their home, but the caregivers will encourage them to stay involved in regular daily tasks, such as housekeeping and gardening.
